Tomlinson is a lawyer with Armstrong Teasdale LLP in St. Louis, where he practices in the areas of business litigation, construction law, and contract and commercial litigation.

He earned his B.S. in 1976 and M.A. in 2002 from the University of Missouri–St. Louis. He obtained his J.D. in 1979 from Columbia School of Law.

There were 363 home sales in Unincorporated Creve Coeur in 2008, with a median sales price of $181,000.
