Equities investor buys Clayton condo

John Tlapek bought a three-bedroom, three bath condo in the new Maryland Walk development in Clayton at 8025 Maryland Ave. for $1,226,483 from Clayton-based Conrad Properties on Jan. 10.

Unit #7K covers 2,819 square feet.

St. Louis-based real estate company Elizabeth Robb and Associates completed the sale.

Mr. Tlapek is a private equities investor and holds an executive position at the Summit Equity Group in St. Louis. He is also the former President of the Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents, leaving that post in Dec. 2006. He was appointed to the board in 1998.

He has previously held ownership positions with Cape Electrical Supply Co. in Cape Girardeau as well as Auto Tire and Parts Co. Inc. in Cape Girardeau.

A noted philanthropist, Mr. Tlapek appeared on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" in Nov. 2005 after buying the talk show host's Harley Davidson motorcycle on E-Bay. Proceeds from the auction went to the American Red Cross Hurricane Katrina Fund.

Mr. Tlapek received his bachelor's degree from Southeast Missouri State University.

He previously owned property at 15 Topton Way in Clayton.

Maryland Walk is a 17-story, 101-unit building that was completed in 2006. Conrad has been developing innovative high-end residences around the St. Louis area since 1971. They are responsible for such properties as The Claytonian, the Hi-Pointe Lofts and the hotel/residence Clayton on the Park.
