Writer buys Clayton condo from attorney

Richard Burgin bought a three-bedroom, two bath at 7507 Byron Pl. in Clayton for $336,000 from Paul Schramm and his wife, Sue, on Jan. 25.

The Schramms paid $197,000 for Unit #1 in Sept. 1996.

Terri Byrne of Gladys Manion Inc. real estate was the agent for the sale. The condo was listed for $349,900.

Burgin is a published fiction writer and a professor of communications and English at Saint Louis University. He is the author of 12 books, including his latest collection of short stories, The Conference on Beautiful Moments. His work has been honored with five Pushcart Prizes, the national award which honors the best short stories, poetry and essays. The award has previously been given to writers such as Raymond Carver, Tim O'Brien and John Irving.

He is also a recognized literary critic, with reviews published in The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune and The Boston Globe. He has previously served as a professor at the University of California-Santa Barbara and Drexel University.

The Massachusetts native has also composed four CD's, and co-produced a CD with designer Gloria Vanderbilt. He attended Brandeis University and Columbia University.

Mr. Schramm is a partner at the St. Louis law firm of Edwards, Schramm, Young & Beilenson, LLP, which formed in 2005.

He received both his law and undergraduate degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

The Schramms bought property at 1756 Pineberr Ct. in St. Louis on Feb. 7.

There are two units in the building at 7507 Byron Pl.

Home sales in Clayton dropped 23 percent in 2007. The median sale price also dropped $16,000 last year, from $527,000 in 2006 to $511,000 in 2007.

Median home sales prices in Clayton have risen steadily since 2002, according to BlockShopper Metrics.
