Home of late Rams owner Frontiere sells for $909K

by James Trotter, published May 27, 2008

A five-bedroom, four bath Frontenac home owned by the late St. Louis Rams owner Georgia Frontiere sold for $909,000 to Cheryl and Mark Ferguson on March 26.

Frontiere paid $875,000 for the property, located at 10628 Oak Gate Lane, in January 2007. The 3,645 square foot home was built in 1976, and remodeled in 1988.

Elaine Medve of Helix Realty Inc. was the agent for the sale. The home was listed for $959,000.

A St. Louis native and one of the city's most renowned civic leaders, Frontiere served as the chairman and owner of the Rams franchise for nearly two decades. She passed away at the UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles after a lengthy battle with breast cancer on Jan. 18. She was 80.

Frontiere served as the chairman and owner of the Rams franchise since 1979, when the team was based in Anaheim, Calif. When she inherited the franchise from her late husband, Carroll Rosenbloom, she became the first female majority owner in American professional sports, and her close ties with the St. Louis area eventually reshaped the city's sports landscape.

She moved the team to St. Louis in 1995 and created a football boom in the city that resulted in the construction of the publicly funded $260 million Edward Jones Dome and the Rams' championship in Super Bowl XXXIV.

In 1997, the St. Louis Ambassadors named Frontiere "Sportsperson of the Year." In 2001, the American Heart Association named her one of the recipients of "The Missourian Award," an award presented to native sons or daughters of Missouri who have made outstanding contributions in business, civic and the arts.

The Sporting News reported on May 20 that Frontiere's children have shown interest in selling the Rams for an estimated $850-900 million, with a relocation back to Los Angeles possibly included in the sale.

Home sales in Frontenac rose more than 18 percent in 2007. The median sale price however, dropped $140,000 last year, from $800,000 in 2006 to $640,000 in 2007.
