Luke Hart Sr. owned this house from 1939 until he passed away in 1964. He was president of the Hamilton-Brown Shoe Co. and the first alderman from St. Louis' 28th ward. Hart Sr. was the tenth Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus. The Knights of Columbus, with more than 1.7 million members, is the world's largest Catholic fraternal service organization. It was during Hart Sr.'s tenure in 1954 that the Knights petitioned to get "under God" inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance.
