Mayor of University City that helped in development of the Delmar Loop owned this house

by BlockShopper Historian published Jan. 31, 2010

Mayor of University City (1965 to 1973) Nathan Kaufman owned this house from 1958 to 1978. He served during times of racial integration and enacted ordinances that prevented neighborhood blight. Kaufman was involved in the development of the Delmar Loop and secured millions of dollars in federal grants and state funds for the construction of the University City public library. His wife, Lily, was the first president of the University City Symphony Orchestra in 1960. The University City Symphony Orchestra was founded to give summer employment to members of the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.
