Aviation pioneer General James "Jimmy" Doolittle owned this house from 1932 to 1938. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his action during the Doolittle Raid in 1942. The Doolittle Raid was the first air raid to hit a Japanese home island (Honshu) during World War II. The raid was named after the dedication and valor displayed while Doolittle planned and commanded the raid. He was involved with the U.S. Air Force from 1917 to 1959. Doolittle left the military in 1931 and lived in this house while working for the Shell Oil Co. In 1932 he won the Thompson Trophy race averaging 406 mph and establishing the landplane speed record. Doolittle returned to active duty in 1940. He passed away in 1993.
